Marvel Rivals

Microtransactions in Marvel Rivals are summarized as...

Marvel Rivals features multiple currencies:

  • Lattice: The primary premium currency, used to purchase the Battle Pass and other currencies.
  • Chrono Tokens: Used to purchase items in the Battle Pass.
  • Units: The primary currency for purchasing cosmetic items. Units are earned through regular gameplay via missions and challenges and can be purchased with Lattice at a 1:1 ratio or with Chrono Tokens at a 2:1 ratio.
  • Constume Tokens: Obtained via real-world purchases of Pick-Up Bundles, Event Passes, or as rewards from some events. Used to purchase some cosmetics or used to exchange for Units.
  • Unstable Molecules: Used to purchase cosmetic variants, obtained from Battle or Event Passes, or purchased with the Premium Currency.
  • Accessory Points: Used to purchase some small cosmetics and obtained by regular play. Obtaining these tokens has a limit per week.
  • Events may feature their own currencies which are limited to that specific event only. These are used to purchase cosmetics related to the event and are obtained by completing challenges during the event.

The Battle Pass functions differently from many other systems. A Battle Pass can be purchased during a limited time, but once purchased, it never expires. Battle Passes may be available to purchase again at a later date, but always for a significant increase in cost. Unlock paths are less linear compared to similar systems. Instead of earning rewards per level, you earn Chrono Tokens through challenges and daily missions. This setup might result in a limited progression track since you can only earn a certain amount of tokens each day. Tokens are then spent on items in the pass, which are divided into pages. Each page requires a total amount of tokens spent to unlock the next. For example, page 1 requires 1,400 tokens, and unlocking page 2 requires spending a total of 1,200 tokens.

The Battle Pass primarily features cosmetic items but also includes other currencies, such as Units and Lattice. However, each pass does not contain enough Lattice to purchase the next one.

The game features a store with bundles, often containing one skin for a character and a collection of lower-tier items such as sprays and emotes. While the skin can be purchased individually, the lower-tier items cannot. These bundles advertise "discounts," despite never being sold without them. The "discounts" are meant to represent the savings compared to purchasing items individually, but since the lower-tier items cannot be bought separately, there is no real comparison.

Additionally, bundle pricing is designed to encourage the purchase of premium currency in specific amounts. For example, many bundles are "discounted" from 2,200 to 1,600, but the available currency packages are 100, 500, 1,000, 2,180, 5,680, and 11,680. To buy a 1,600-cost bundle, players must either purchase the 2,180 package or make three separate purchases to reach 1,600.
